Saline Parks & Recreation offers swimming lessons to all ages and abilities.

  1. Choose Your Level: Swim class placement is determined by both age and ability level. Read the descriptions for each level to determine where to place your child. Need help? Talk to your child’s current instructor or contact the Rec Center at (734) 429-3502 for placement assistance.
  2. Choose Your Dates and Times: Do mornings work well for you? Would you rather attend in the evening? How about Saturdays? There are many days and times to choose from.
  3. Come to Class and Have Fun! Check in sheets for swim classes are located at the front desk. Please sign in before each class then proceed to the locker rooms. Have children use the restroom and then shower off before heading out to the pool deck. All participants should wait on the deck for their instructor. Please do not allow children to enter the water before their class starts.
  4. After Class: All children will be asked to exit the pool and return to their parents. Open swim is not included with lessons. Keep in mind that the leisure pool is closed and the lap pool is for adult lap swim only during classes.
Group Lessons
Age Class Swimming Prerequisite Skills
6 - 24 months with an adult Tadpoles - No swimming skill requirements
- One adult is required per child
2 - 4 years with an adult Guppies - No swimming skill requirements
- One adult is required per child
- Geared for toddlers with little or no experience in a pool or who may need the support of a trusted adult
3 - 5 years Star Fish - No swimming skill required
- Ability to listen and follow directions from the instructor
Minnow - Submerge head and hold breath for 2 - 3 seconds
- Front and back floats 2 - 3 seconds each and recover to a standing position independently
Sea Turtle - Front and back floats 5+ seconds each
- Swim 15 - 20 feet on front, rolling over for breath
- Swim 15 - 20 feet on back
6 - 8 years Otter - Beginner level for those with little/no prior swim lessons

Dolphin - Comfort in deep water (lap pool)
- Front and back floats 10 - 15 seconds each
- Swim 40 feet on front, rolling over for breath
- Swim 40 feet on back
- Treat water for 15 seconds
Shark - Swim 25 yards freestyle with some side breathing
- Swim 25 yards backstroke
- Breaststroke kick
- Tread water for 1 minute
9 - 12 years Level 1 - Beginner level for those with little/no prior swimming lessons
Level 2 - Comfort in deep water (lap pool)
- Front and back floats 10 - 15 seconds each
- Swim 40 feet on front, rolling over for breath as needed
- Swim 40 feet on back
- Tread water for 15 seconds


Private Lessons
Age Class Lesson Description
3 years to Adult Private - No swimming skill requirements
- One-on-one instruction
- Lesson/skill improvement tailored to participant's specific needs
Semi-private - No swimming skill requirements
- Up to 3 participants and must be similar in skill level
- First participant can register online
- To add additional participants to lesson slot, please call the front desk at (734) 429-3502
- All participants added to the private lesson will be charged the Semi-Private Lesson Additional Participant fee
