Architectural Description: This is a gable front-and-wing house. The gable front section, which was previously one-and-one-half stories, has been modified to two stories. The wing section is one story in height and has a separate entrance. There have been several modifications to the house over the years. Some of the identifying features have been altered or removed, such as the wide cornice band that was present on the front gable section in the 1994 survey photo.
The chimney that had once been present on the wing section was also removed.  The siding, windows and front door appear to have been recently replaced.

History: The date of construction is believed to be pre-1850, making this the second oldest house in the West Henry/South Lewis Historic District. The Kosky and Glynn Survey reported that the structure seemed to be on the 1872 Bird’s Eye View and an earlier map of Washtenaw county, dated 1854. The wide cornice band that was recently removed was an indicator of an original gable front, Greek Revival style house. The wing section and porch were later additions.
The Howard family owned the house from 1878 through at least 1947.  In the 1878-1879 Washtenaw County Directory, Saline Village (F.H. Pray), A.H Howard is listed as a carriage maker, living on the "west side of Lewis between Henry and Chicago."  Emma Howard is listed at this location in the directory in 1926, and Charles and Emma Howard are listed at this address in the 1947 directory.  An assessor’s file from 1947 reported the house as being "old" at that time (Kosky and Glynn).
